Easter 2013

"Easter is my favorite holiday," she said out loud to no one in particular.

"Why is it your favorite?" I asked anyway.

"Because I get to wear a new special outfit!" she proclaimed.

"Why do you get to wear a new outfit?" I asked, prodding her.

"Because it's Easter." She said matter-of-factly.

"Oh!" I said. "And why do we celebrate Easter?" I asked her.

"Because," she answered in a dynamic whisper, "Jesus is ALIVE!"

Girl Talk

Today was picture day at school for the Sasster. I was fixing her hair in my bathroom and I accidentally stumbled across one of those minefield conversations without meaning to. It went something like this....

"Are you excited about school today?"

"Yes! I'm excited to see my friend Macy."

"Oh yeah?"

"Yeah. And my friends Sam and Deacon."

"Boys are silly friends, huh? Like your brothers?"

"Yeah. But my favorite boy is Charles."

"Oh really? Why?"

"Well, because I like him."

(......??????!!!!!! You're four!!! too young to have this conversation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

calmly... "you mean he's a good friend?"

"yeah. Because I just really like him."

"Why do you like him?"

"Well, because he's cute to look at."

"Does he like you too?"

"Well, he didn't say that. But he thinks I'm cute because God made me cute."

(I die.)

Dear Shepherd (Two Years)

Dear Shepherd,

You've got this really great, from the gut, laugh right now. Every time I hear it I cannot help but laugh along with you. It's like this contagious joy that wells up inside of you and spreads to everyone who is near. I know you don't realize right now what a treasure that is, but I think I am starting to. Because that's the kind of Mom I want to be: contagiously joyful. It's the kind of friend I want to be, the kind of wife I want to be, the kind of Christian I want to be....so joyful it's contagious. It's what I want for you too. I beg Jesus to save you. To woo you to Himself with his own contagious joy.

- You weigh 28 lbs (63%) and are 35.3 inches tall (72%). Dr. G estimates you will be 5'10''-5'11'' tall when you grow up!

- You wear size 24 month/2T clothes, size 5 diapers, and size 7 Toddler shoes

- You take one 2+ hour nap every day and sleep 12 hours at night.

- Your eating has drastically improved. We have discovered that you love spicy food. Mexican and BBQ especially.

- You still love balloons most of all, but your fixation has decreased some

- You love to play with cars and trains and planes

- You are quite the little dancing machine. I mean really. No one can "drop it like its hot" quite like you.

- You love to throw balls and have quite an arm.

-You still adore your daddy, but you and I have bonded a lot these past couple months

- Your vocabulary has increased so much that I stopped writing down all of the new words you say because I can't keep track anymore. My current favorites are: "yee-haw", "tick-tock", "love you", "turtle", and "amen!"

- You love your sister and love to play with her when she doesn't take your toys away from you. You can now identify her and say "sister"

- You love Fischer too. Sometimes when I lay him on the ground to play you say "awwwwwww" and give him a kiss. He adores you and watches every move you make.

- We had a really fun Birthday Party at the aquarium! Mommy had originally planned to take you to the zoo, but due to sick siblings we had to come up with a different plan. Daddy, Mommy, you, Sasster, brother, and Miss Fun Jen all went and saw the fishies with you. You were so excited....you just kept walking around clapping and saying "yay!!!" I made you a homemade zebra cake and we pretended it was for the zebra sharks they have at the aquarium. It tasted yummy! Daddy made you chocolate chip pancakes for a special birthday breakfast.  Mommy and Daddy gave you a big boy pillow (Mommy made the pillowcase from your bumper pad when you were a baby), a special toy train that daddy found in Canada, a Lightning McQueen throw pillow, and a toy "Percy" train. Your PawPaw and Mimi sent you an awesome set of blocks that you especially love to play with and a special card that had your picture on it!

- On Sunday we had a special surprise lunch with Grammy and Papa and G-G and Great Grandaddy. Grammy and Papa gave you a Lightning McQueen car ramp, some awesome clothes, and money to go towards your big boy bed! You loved seeing them, especially your Papa!

Shepherd, you are a blessing that I treasure everyday! I love watching you grow!

Ten Things You May Not Know (Or Care To Know) About Me

1. I smell books.

Pretty much every book I read I will smell. I literally open the book, stick my nose in the middle of it and take a whiff. I have been known to not read a book because it doesn't smell good. The best smell is always the smell of a new Bible.

2. On my first day of high school, I fell going up the stairs.

Yes, up.  Not down.

3. When I was pregnant with Laura Kate, I was worried she may not have ears.

Seriously. I never saw them on a sono and she never really responded to noises in my belly that I could tell. In fact, while the nurse was cleaning her and Kyle was talking to her after she was born, I called out to him, "does she have ears??!!" I am happy to report that not only does she have ears but she has excellent hearing (when she chooses to.).

4. I really prefer the 3rd stall in a bathroom.

Not the first and certainly not the second, but the third. I know I'm weird. It gets worse when you hear the reason. As a child, I remember seeing a clip of a movie where someone put a bomb in the toilet of a bathroom and it was the second stall and the whole bathroom blew up. I don't want to be responsible for the flush that blows the whole bathroom up, nor do I want my hiney blown off.

And in case you are wondering, I start counting by the first stall I come to. If there are two rows, I go to the third stall on the left. If there aren't three stalls I try the first or fifth, just seems like odd numbers are better. If the third stall is dirty and the first and fifth unavailable, I will use the second and squeeze my eyes tight when I flush.

5. I chew gum to the rhythm of my blinker in my car.

6. I got bitten by a spider in Indonesia and had to go to the hospital in Singapore and ride around in a wheelchair down the streets of Hong Kong.

7. I'm afraid of heights.

8. I belt out to Mariah Carey and Celine Dion in the car sometimes when I am driving. You'll always be my baby.

9. I color-code the months of the year in my head and when we come to a new month, I mentally switch the color in my head.

10. I will go out of my way to step on crunchy leaves when walking.
